Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela is a very important man from South- Africa. He is important because he is the first black president in South-Africa, the first to be elected in a fully representative democratic election, who held office from 1994 – 1999. Before he was president he was an anti- apartheid activist and the leader of the African National Congress, armed wing Umkhonto we Sizwe. The South Africa court convicted him on charges of sabotage, as well as other crimes committed while he led the movement against apartheid. In accordance with his conviction. Nelson Mandela served 27 years in prison, spending many of these years on Robben Island. He got the Nobel Peace Price in 1993 with South- Africa then being president Frederik Willem de Kerk.
